Higher Education | Over 1 400 UNISA students under investigation

The University of South Africa has confirmed that over 1 400 students are under investigation for academic dishonesty. The university management says all cases are being prioritised and treated with the necessary sensitivity and integrity at the institution. More than 6 000 students were implicated in various academic transgressions at the institution, including plagiarism and exam cheating.

As a mostly sitting exam graduate I begged UNISA not to consider this way of assessment. Even if found to be effective, it still creates room for doubt.

About time. The accepting of students needs to get more exclusive. That is a score for each course needs to be achieved after writing matric exams. If it’s not reached potential students need to enroll in college courses to obtain bridging scores to enable higher learning. If that fails then counselling for those who are unable to achieve to look at alternative pathways to satisfactory gainful employment. It’s not failure rather a realisation dreams are sometimes too unrealistic.

Please allow us to write in a venue-based sitting because this system clearly has loopholes that are affecting people's studies in a very bad way. I bet some of the students who are under investigation are innocent and you're wasting their time.

Despite relying so much on technology they couldn't at least use the most advanced and accurate ones, turtin is a problem, invigilator app is a problem

Change is inevitable, if UNISA thought it best to accommodate more students through the use of technology, then they are living up to their mandate. Obviously there will always be room for improvement, as it is with anything in life. Keep up the great work UNISA.
