In this episode of Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools, we are going to fearlessly twist the knobs of a Korg Electribe EA-1. Will the Electribe hardliners show up at my place with torches and pitchforks? Is it really the odd one out in the bunch?

Ahhh. Memories. The EA, a tr 606 and a midi to sync box, a tr 707 a Russian Big Muff and a parametric equalizer. Those were the days.

I've absolutely destroyed raves with that thing. Shredded it. Gotta know where the sweet spots are, and how to use them. And when to use them. Also, I'll add.. It sounds a lot bigger coming through a 50, 000 watt system in a warehouse. I believe that is what they were designed for ;)

The favorite patch I ever made on this created a sound like a fart performed with such strength that you could hear the cheeks flapping. Very realistic and with no need to make the microphone smell bad. A++ would buy again.

With the ER-1, pan the kick hard left and all the other drums hard right. Then you have the kick on it's own mono channel and the other drums on their own mono channel. You should put reverb and or delay on the right channel and compression on the kick. Thank me later.

I love how you take “bad gear” and make it sound great proving its (mostly) the artist not the tools.

I love my early Electribes. EA and ES 1 user here. The sequencer is so fun.

This is one of the most entertaining gear videos I have ever seen.

2:56 He's like the Cenk of old gear. The synth is always going to sound amazing, and we'll keep forgetting it's 99% instinct

This is my first machine, I'm self-taught and to be perfectly honest, I was very naive, I knew so little about it that when I bought it second-hand in an old store, and I was surprised when I got home that there were no rhythmic sounds in it. So I spent the first two months of my beginnings trying to get as much out of it as possible and also learning in passing. Korg was my first setup with the small electribes (before the PC) and was a good teacher for me due to these limitations and therefore the obligation to find devious ways to get more out of it than what it offers at first glance. (this is especially true with the sampler).. ok it doesn't sound great, no envelope, etc etc etc, but it taught me what a filter was, an oscillator, a delay etc.. and the sampler what resampler was and lots of other little things that I still use!.. I can't thank Korg enough for that. even if I see things differently now, it's still there on the desk, and will remain like the ER1 that I love and that is often turned on..

Fun piece of kit. I remember a good frend of mine showing me a way to output it back into itself creating a feedback loop. Made it able to make some cool formant sounds. Real pain in the but to sequence notes though.

Gosh I am finding all of my old gear in your videos this morning. I remember when I bought the EA-1 and ER-1 to use with my DJX keyboard at the end of ‘99. While they were limited I had a blast playing them and forever regret selling them, though I used that money to buy an Access Virus A, which has been my favorite.

I was close to buying a second pair about 15 years ago at a used music shop where I could have gotten them both for $200 but it was Christmas, money was tight and I ended up getting a layaway refund 😭

I still look around for them from time to time and have almost pulled the trigger on several occasions. Maybe... someday.

I haven't watched this video yet, it is "Queue's up" to watch. But I have to say I love my Electribe EA-1. As I'm downsizing/upgrading mystudio gear, I sold my electribe EMX 1, and my MC707, but am keeping my EA-1.

I like to put my EA-1 in an fx loop on an aux channel (share the love, so to speak). The audio input is super fun for slicing up a drum beat, or theremin, or whatever is in the mix really :)
