Electrek has reportedly obtained pictures of Tesla's new Roadrunner battery cell that is poised to be unveiled at the upcoming Tesla Battery Investor Day. Wow! If this leak is legit it confirms what we have been speculating for so long! Tesla will bring battery cell production in house, with a crazy new cell design! I need your help unpacking this leak, but from my initial research it looks like cat's out of the bag ...

Hi Gali, I think Tesla will have a 3 tier battery programme, Road runner for top tier ( Roadster, Semi, Plaid S and X)
Middle tier: ion lithium cells, ( Panasonic, LG chem etc) Cybertruck, model 3, S, X
Lower tier: Lithium Iron phosphate ( CATL), base model 3 ( and 2).

IT makes sense that Tesla will utilize all batteries they van get their hands off, meaning different chemestries as well, if they want to reach terra production capacity.

I'm pretty sure the increased size is made possible by two things. Both are related to the tabless technology. First, the tabless design reduces electrical resistance which in turn reduces generation of heat. Second, the tabless design should allow heat to be transferred from the center of the battery to the ends more efficiently (more surface area in contact with the ends of the cell casing). The end result should be less heat and also better transfer of the remaining heat. This allows for a larger cell without cooking the chemistry in the middle of the cell.

Also, heat is a form of waste/inefficiency in electrical systems so reducing resistance/heat is also making the cells more efficient during heavy charging/discharging.

These physical improvements alone will likely be significant in terms of cost reduction and capacity. I'm hoping there are some chemistry improvements as well.

Less metal per cell since one of these cells should be about 5-6 traditional cells. Should be lighter, all other things remaining equal. Less cells to handle. More space for heat dissipation. That, by itself is an advantage... My 5 cents as chemical engineer .

I think I understand how all of these inventions come together as soon as I saw the larger diameter battery. Its amazingly clear that the sum of these features, specifically the tab-less battery and the larger cell size, and 'End/tab' battery cooling combine to turn this into a step change battery technology. Not to mention the dry electrode process.
1st, its clear that the larger battery size improves volumetric capacity and will be more cost effective to manufacture and integrate into the battery pack. Less cells to pack in.
2nd point is that the larger diameter cell would be more difficult to cool using tesla;s existing method that cools the side of the cells.
- But with the tab-less Design allows very efficient to cool from the ends of the battery especially for a larger diameter battery as the cooling surface area increases with the diameter.!!

Also, the tab-less design that has lower internal resistance will be able to charge and discharge much faster. This is a huge breakthrough as well since charge time is still a factor compared to ICE vehicles.

The battery is the new oil! I dont know if people fully understand how important a lead in battery technology and the low cost Manufacture of large volumes of battery is to winning this marathon!. Thanks for all the great content and insights.

I love the larger cells. We were so busy seeing how the tabless cell would improve longevity we didn’t think of how it may remove arbitrary barriers to using larger cells efficiently. Legit outside the box thinking and it may very well be a home run. :) like Elon said, tabless is more important than we realize.

Gali- Based on some info on "The Limiting Factor" channel ( apparently a 54100 cell instead of 2170) we get a volume of 9.44 times the 2170 battery. Much easier to make, fewer needed per car, tabless construction with flanges to weld onto a plate. Almost 9.5 times the kw-hour storage capacity in one cell. Better thermal management. Looks real to me.
