The New Normal

Have you ever bought something expecting it to significantly improve your life? For a short time it might. But eventually you get used to the thing - it becomes the new normal.

In this video I talk about hedonic adaption (or the hedonic treadmill) & how a rise in money or buying a new car won't bring long-lasting happiness.

New videos every week! New podcast every Wednesday!

Thanks for watching!

You're an excellent storyteller Matt.

Also I just find it interesting how you keep your balance between the minimalist lifestyle and having a decent collection of expensive tech. I would love to see a video about this kind of topic, like how you decide whether a gadget is worth for you to buy (for personal or professional use). I hope this makes sense to you

Your doc Minimalism will always be my fave but when it comes to visuals, I love your small videos like these. The coloring, music, visual style, cutting...and your personality and unique voice really comes through. Look forward to more!!!

We still love our 20 year old Dualit toaster! It was ridiculously expensive for a toaster but is still looking good and toasting up a storm. But it’s the only thing we still have from back then, TVs and music systems have come and gone, designer clothes have been donated as they lost the thrill. The simplified version of me (my husband still loves him some tech!) is happier and more free. But I still love our toaster 🍞

Wow I was just browsing for something to watch while I ate, but this hit me on a deep, philosophical level. Well done, sir.

That's exactly what I feel and I was not happy. After reading and watching so many minimalism journal and videos, including your documentary, I finally realize what is most important to me in my life, and that will provide true happiness to me. Thank you

I just recently discovered your channel. I've seen videos from the minimalists before and I've watched your entire making of series of your documentation. I absolutely love your videos, they are so incredibly well made, your story telling, your voice, your unbelievable awesome colour grading (seriously, it's so awesome I could watch this toaster in your kitchen all day).
Also I just agree with your thoughts and experiences in minimalism. It is such an easy and basic but so important message in the modern world of consumption and maximalism.
Keep up the great work!

What makes me happy is trying new things - getting into new hobbies, while only few remain for longer period. That counts as a lifestyle right?

I love to paint. The best time is in natural morning light. Watercolor takes time, it is meditative. I want to let the painting tell me when it is finished, so i want to be able to focus.
I got a beautiful desk for christmas last year as a space to paint. My watercolor painting is still sitting there, less than half finished, waiting for the perfect moment that just doesnt come. I love to paint, but i dont.

My grandfather would say, contentment is wealth. No matter what you have if you are happy thats wealth.. life explained in simple words.
I live in India as a pediatrician. I make money as much as a American does and i spend as much as Indian does.
Minimalist life is abundance. I literally adore your channel. Please keep up the good work.
