In 1941, during a break from diplomatic duties in Palm Beach, Florida, Winston Churchill decided to go skinny-dipping—despite warnings from his bodyguard. While swimming, Churchill encountered a shark, causing him to quickly retreat to the shallows. Ever the wit, Churchill later quipped, “My bulk has frightened him into deeper water!” This odd event would later tie into a discussion in the British Parliament about developing shark repellents. Churchill, of course, had the last word: "You may rest assured that the British government is entirely opposed to sharks."

Iirc, Churchill has a bad/odd habit of bathing frequently and having absolutely no shame of his nudity. He even hold meetings and do business while bathing! There’s even an incident where Roosevelt walked in on him naked, and he simply replied “I have nothing to hide from the President of the U.S”

(Basically, it’s no wonder he went skinny dipping for no reason)

That is one of my favorite Churchill quotes. Also, when his aide warned him that he could be seen by people if they had binoculars, Churchill replied that if people are going to "go to all that trouble than it is is their fault what they see!"

That and "The problem with America is that their liquor is too strong and their toilet paper too soft!" 😂

Oddly Churchill was half American. His mother was an American heiress and socialite

Thankfully it wasn't a bull shark. Shallow water or repellant ain't going to save you from joining the metal car plate in his stomach.

Our French teacher, so many years ago, worked for the government and espionage and counter espionage. At the time, Churchill visited on the diplomatic mission, he was available in the United States. He was assigned to ensure Churchills safety…. Among others. My teacher was short, slight build, and totally forgettable, with a complexion that made him blend into the background. There were bodyguards and then there were the background people that she didn’t see, watching the spies watching Churchill.

He said that the US government, did not arrest spies when they found them as a rule. That was because once identified, they could be watched if they were arrested, they would be replaced with someone that they didn’t know. However, this did not mean that they were never arrested only underneath certain circumstances. Also, once they were identified, you could also feed them erroneous information. Which they try to do the best to put them off from watching Churchill.

He said that Churchill was a nightmare. he had no regard for a safety, I’m by that had no regard for the bodyguards safety because of his reckless behavior. He was very cantankerous, and downright reckless. Over the years, I remembered what he said about Churchill and his description and the stories which have faded into little snippets here and there, and comparing it to everything that has been written about Churchill. Which was he had no concern for a safety and he was cantankerous…… He was definitely the right man at the right time and the right job.
