You must understand these traditional coats were made to keep you warm. The longer the coat, the warmer you are. As well, men walked more places, so the actual fabrics were hefty and heavy. As well, overcoats are supposed to fit comfortably over your suit also not limiting movement.

You can see in my man’s eyes he’s so hurt by these awful designs

That silhouette is straight from the 40s catalogue

Being a shorter, stocky guy, overcoats are some of the only dress items I can buy off the rack for exactly the reasons Proff mentioned about the length and the lower button stance. Unlike with suits and blazers, by buying regular length I only need the sleeves shortened and maybe the width adjusted to have a great fitting overcoat that actually does what it's supposed to.

If you’re 6’2” or taller, the full length overcoat that you speak of makes a lot of sense from a practical and aesthetic perspective. However, if you’re under 6’, this type of coat will make you look smaller (even with proper tailoring). This may be why topcoats were invented. Side note, love the overcoat you modeled. Just not the hat, only because the hat looks like it’s more of a spring to summer vibe, whereas the overcoat is more late fall to winter vibe. Nonetheless, another great video. Thanks for sharing.

Those arenot "overcoats". Those are "car coats". They are not designed to be worn with business shirts, or sport jackets underneath. They are designed to be worn with turtlenecks, cable knit seaters, mock necks, crew necks, flat caos, and caps. They are for stylish casual outings, not related to business at all.

I have no interest in suits but it's calming to just listen to these guys talk about fancy clothes

I had a pea coat when I was a schoolboy. I miss those days. 😢

Frock coats are actually cut in two pieces, i.e. with a skirt to give a tighter waist but they haven't been commonly worn since about 1920

I'm not gonna lie, I never gave it much thought and I have a coat just like the last one pictured. It's cozy and warm, which is why I wear a coat in the first place. Nobody except other fashionistas look at it as anything other than a coat, so I think we're safe lol

My coat seems to have an ever so slightly lower button stance though. Like you can see a hair of my jacket peeking through

Long overcoat look more like a dress than short coats.

Maybe it’s not an “OVERcoat” but it’s still a fashionable coat that keeps you warm. I live in SE Texas and we have mild winters for the most part where a shorter winter coat is very much appropriate. As a fashion traditionalist, these shorter coats coupled with more casual fashions must be driving you absolutely crazy. 😁

Sir Okey... your overcoat gave you the silhouette of monster in Paris 😅😂

Yes, these pseudo-coats are not only too short - they are way too small. No chance to wear a sport jacket under it, not enough space. I seriously can't comprehend it.

Honestly just if you can buy either a navy surplus (even modern ones are still amazing and plenty of new old stock) or find one that mentions a “naval style” they look amazing

The long double breasted coat is nice. Not everyone wants a coat to come down to your ankles. A three quarter length is great for me since Im only 5'7". It might not be an overcoat but it works for some.

Yes, overcoats are designed to drop below the knees, otherwise you get wet knees when it is raining :)
Jackets do not drop below the knees
