Is CROWDSOURCING good for you?

Crowdsourcing got a very bad reputation, especially amongst creatives for exploiting talent and not paying artists a fair price for their efforts. In spite of the negative criticism from experts and leading associations like AIGA, crowdsourcing became a widely used format for all kinds of creative projects and areas. In this video I would like to show you both the pros and cons of entering crowdsourced design contests and help you decide whether it is something you should consider taking part in.

Have you ever tried taking part in a crowdsourcing design contest? If you have which platform did you use and what did you think about it?

I just happened upon this video while researching crowdsourcing.

In my agency days, if a big client wanted a pitch from multiple agencies they would reach out to 3-4.
Whomever won the pitch was selected. This was also known as spec work. The other agencies didn't have prior knowledge of the creative work..

Now, any schmuck that wants to have a "contest" can have as many "designers" (with talent or not, or plagiarizing [yes, it's not being a copycat, it's called plagiarism] something that they saw somebody else do) battle it out for scraps (yes, $100-200 is scraps).

So thanks for the crowdfunding pep talk. Crowdsourcing is the creative equivalent of H1B visas in the USA; cheaper, derivative work replacing years of talent for pennies on the dollar. The only ones who make out on the deal are the corps who enact a "transaction" for creating the mess in the first place.

Hi, Martin. Not so long ago I've started my digital marketing business. I've educated myself, got the necessary certificates, made my own website. But in this business reviews are king. If you don't have reviews - you don't have clients. Being an impatient person, I decided to also get into web-design since I've enjoyed the process while designing my own. I also wanted to get some graphic design basics to help me out. This is where I bought you course on photoshop (completely worth it btw). I didn't want to work on imaginary project, and discovered 99designs (two weeks ago). For the first week I was browsing contests, made designs but didn't submit. I was trying to answer questions like: can I generate design ideas? does my work look good? do I use my tools efficiently etc. A week ago I started to submit my designs, the first got 2 stars, and I won the second (just yesterday) and it feels awesome. So I don't understand why people are complaining. You get the real work, you get real feedback, you get the real money. I cannot jumpstart my digital marketing business like that. As for the suggestions for the next video I would personally would like web related topic, like graphics for web, banners, backgrounds. Also if you have some tips for starter like me, I would appreciate it. Cheers!
