Although the contents of the abandoned ship's boat seem entirely bizarre if you consider the officers needing local supplies it would make sense to have such dispensable but attractive items for trading with any local hunters they met. Perhaps there's a logic there that isn't being considered.

I am fascinated with everything to do with the franklin expedition. The fact that we now know where the ships are and even looked inside is mindblowing to me. Rifles on the wall still and a captains cabin which may hold more information if we could just get into it. Time capsules to almost 200 years ago.

One of the best lectures on the subject as of yet, thank you!

Interesting. I remember seeing a picture of the Franklin Expedition mummified remains in a Readers Digest book about exploration when i was a child, , the humans remains gave me quite a fright! You would think poor sir Franklin would have had enough on his first canadian trek after eating boots!! My respects to the lost explorers some of them very young. REST IN PEACE.

16:25 He says "4 inch thick steel plating installed all the way around the ship" for protection against the ice. 4 inches thick does not sound correct. It sounds too thick and too heavy. Can anyone confirm this is correct or incorrect?

There seems to be a body of good research that indicates the lead poisoning hypotheses is wrong. Samples from individuals who survived longer and therefore ate more of the canned food didn’t have higher lead levels. Also samples from RN sailors who didn’t go on the expedition were found to have similar high lead levels. More likely to have come from living in industrial Britain at that time.

36:37 Maybe the explorers brought along all those trinkets to trade with any fur trappers or Inuit they might run across for food and warmer clothing.

The best and most inspiring part of this story is how Lady Jane refuses to give up on her husband and fights relentlessly for him against essentially governments of the world.

@32:18 Dr John Rae actually *was* finally awarded the £10, 000 reward for news of the fate of the Franklin expedition. His enemies, however, did manage to deny him a knighthood, or broader recognition of his considerable achievements.

Much interesting information packed in under one hour. Thank you...Despite an unfortunate start :-D
(Marco Polo didn't discover any riches, which has not been know and traded since the bronze age.)
