The best engine for a truck is the one that you have under your hood, and is working & making you $$$.
I'm partial to Series 60's because it's all I own.

Series 60 DDEC3, used to get 7MPG easy on mine, pulled as hard as anything else I've driven, only ever needed turbo and a couple injectors over its lifetime

I've owned them all but for longevity I would have to say c15 or 3406 both are virtually the same. I just sold a c15 with 1.5 million never had a rebuild still pulling strong.

6nz 3406e, and i think the best cost to preformance is a detroit 60 series. Also have had a couple c12's in the lighter duty tractors that still pull like brand new at 800+ km

not even a question, 3406E or C15 if u want a different logos. 2.2 million miles on machine block rebuild from 1996, New injectors and a new variable Turbo... of think I put a stater on it. what's great, is I can actually do most of the work like putting on alternators/starters. it's just a well designed machine, not perfect but comparatively, 3406 series in general is best 500-1000 hp motor to build if your gonna do it

N14 or a 12.7 only two engines worth owning. Old School 3406B or a 855. 400 big cam. I like the 444 too and never had an over heating problem with one. If running warm put a new radiator in. Problem solved.

3406-B stood for bullet proof, took mine to over 900K miles and I framed it! No problems with it whatsoever just shy of the million
