I like it when you title it “which engine brand is the best” and at the end say “it really depends on…”😂😂

We sell and service both engines. I agree with the video that they are both are durable and reliable. These are the two best engine brands out there for good reason.

Even in our shop we have techs that debate over which is better.

The video did a good job of showing snips of information on the ratings but I wish you would have gone further with service and other details.

Detroit Engines are the best option in most applications with a few exceptions. Here is why.

1. Service Intervals:

Detroits typically longer. Look at the brochures for reference and make sure your looking at the correct Green House Gas year.

Heavy Duty Example: GHG21 both DD15 and X15 go up-to 75, 000 miles. But GHG17 X15 went up-to 50, 000 miles and DD15 went up-to 75, 000 miles

Medium Duty example: DD8 is up to 60, 000 miles vs B6.7 up to 30, 000 miles (w/ large oil pan) vs L9 up to 50, 000 miles.

2. Service locations:

Cummins wins this hands down but it’s misleading a little because some of those service locations are only certified for (1) Cummins engine.

3. Standard Warranty coverage:
Detroits is better.

HD ex: DD15 - 2yr/unlimited miles vs X15 2yr/250k

MD ex: DD8 - 3yr/250k miles vs L9 2yr/250k

4. Extended warranty options:

Detroit offers a wider offering. Depending on the engine Detroit offers up-to 7yr-400k vocational or 6yr/600k. Cummins normally only goes up-to 5yr/500k

5. Diagnostic tools:

Detroit is easier to use - this is subjective technically but if you ask techs who use both DDDL and Cummins insight, 9 out of 10 say Detroit is easier.

6. Parts availability:

Detroit components are generally easier to find although post covid both have serious problems.

7. Support:

You’re much more likely to get some sort of help from Detroit Reps even if you’re out of warranty a little.

If you’re out of warranty’s Cummins doesn’t care unless you have thousands of trucks.

8. Fuel Economy:
Generally speaking Detroit is better but you can adjust the specs to achieve your objectives for both. It’s typically a balancing act between performance and fuel economy and what you want/need for your application.

At the end of the day it depends on application, your location in regards to support, and your relationship with service providers but I’d choose Detroit 95 times out of 100.

However - stay away from the Detroit DD5 unless you haul light, are in flat terrain only, and/or really want fuel economy. It’s lasts forever but is puny.

I am not a driver or mechanic but I just love the sound of a 2 stroke Detroit…… nothing else like it ….nothing

As an owner operator I have ran both dd15 and Cummins x15 efficiency series. Both engines were spec’d similarly with the only major difference being the truck with the Cummins has 3.08 differentials and the dd15 had 3.55’s. The Detroit had much more downtime and lower mpg’s. 7.4 vs Cummins 8.1 mpg.
The dd15 was rated for 450 1650 and the Cummins is rated for 450 1850. Even though The Cummins has taller gears, it is much more satisfying to drive and climb hills it has a 10 speed manual . Over the last month I have been running loads with another driver that has a dd13. He states that his tune is 470 1650 automatic with 2.64 differentials. Every hill we have climbed he has fallen behind, sometimes by as much as 2 miles. I’d also like to mention his emission system has been deleted. So don’t fall for the rumors that deleted trucks are better. Proper specs and maintenance will get you just as reliable of an engine with the emission system intact.

Nothing was mentioned about long term reliability and durability. Detroit has the edge in that category. Cummins has more repair locations because the engines need service and repairs more often!

Cummins, yet I have a soft spot for the old '71 series Detroit Drippers.

All I can say is that I have a 60 series with a eaton 10 spd transmission in my 99 fld120 and can out pull most of these newer trucks up a 4 to 6% grade at close to max weight without really getting the motor close to overheating.

In the end, a pre-emissions CAT wins every time!!

I’ll take any Detroit (60 series or DD platform) or the N14

Is it true. The DD ENGINE cant be rebuilt because of something to do with the sleeves? See lots of big companys getting rid of 20 to 22 DD engine trucks with only 600 to 800 kms for cheap seen as low as $17, 000

Caterpillars are long gone, I’ve driven all the biggest, horsepower rated from all the manufacturers. But the most powerful best pulling of them all is a Detroit DD15 with an 18 speed.

Cummins N14 black and red top are both phenomenal engines! But to me nothing beats a Detroit Series-60 12.7!! Those Series 60 are hard to beat!!
