I won't lie. I turned off the match when Iga was down 5 - 2 in the 3rd set, thinking no way she could answer Naomi's power and confidence with such a deficit. How Iga won this is beyond me. Wow.

wow I was expecting Osaka to lose easily; didn't expect her to steamroll Iga for almost two sets before faltering. To have match points agst the best claycourter and world number 1 in 2024 is quite a feat. Hope this spurs Osaka to greater heights!

Despite the loss, Osaka is playing so much better on clay. And that's a major complement considering her opponent is the female equivalent of Nadal in his dominant years (my opinion).

Naomi should be excited for the rest of the season. She was one point away from beating the World #1 on Iga's best surface and her worst surface. That says tons about the game she still has left to offer.

I'm sad for Osaka, but this is why I said 4 years ago that Iga was the next Steffi Graf. Her ability to just ignore the score is something else. Serena was great coming back from 4-5 down, but -14 and 2-5 and match point down is something else and requires a different form of mental toughtness in my opinion. Iga is a rarity, that is for sure.
