One shouldn't be surprised that Black enrollment wasn't increased due to DEI because tuition fees are outrageous and Ann Arbor is a very expensive city.

So Colin Powell didn’t work hard to become a 4 star general on his own effort? I don’t think so!

Universities will always be into DEI and inclusiveness that takes away from those who study hard and want the higher education. Look at all the athletes that are admitted or even given full ride scholarships because of their athletic ability (not smarts). We all know that a majority of the athletes weren’t academically inclined in high school. I feel sorry for students who can’t get into a university yet have excellent grades, studied hard, and want the college degree. I also feel sorry that when they get into a university that the school is known for its football or basketball program rather than it’s academics.

Can we talk about DEI in the workplace next?

I'm not against DEI, in general, but bombarding people with information about white-supremacy, especially in classes that don't focus on social issues, is dumb and will cause people to draw back from the concept of equality/equity. And second point, maybe the drop off in minorities applying to colleges might be how damned expensive it is, and that minorities still tend to be less affluent than us white folk. I went to college over 30 years ago and the 'affirmative action' students were very hard working and were as good as the kids whose parents could easily afford tuition.... It might help to have a unified idea as to what a DEI program should look like.

The panel didn't get it. The real problem with DEI is two things: #1 Stop trying to push a narrative. History should speak for itself. Don't sanitize the past but don't demonize it either. #2 A good DEI program is complex, nuanced, and takes hard work. But most organizations want to be lazy - throw up a couple of pride flags, talk about how awful slavery was, and celebrate women's suffrage then call it a day. That won't cut it.

The last guy said people are tired of having it in their face. But it shouldn't even be presented in a way that feels forced. Take the art example. Instead of talking about how European art is oppressive, how about just expose art students to art from other cultures? After all, ART is a HUGE category that encompasses many different cultures, centuries, and purposes. The approach I'm referring to is similar to some points Adam Neely made in a YT video called Music Theory and White Supremacy.

If you are the best of the best, you do not need DEI or Affirmative Action. What we do need is strict enforcement of non-discrimination.

DEI oversimplified the world. People didn’t like being scapegoats, and people didn't like being infantilized like they were agentless or pathetic. DEI, however well intentioned, did both.

Look at the MLB from beginning to present. Before the color barrier was broken, those involved in baseball, from the players to the owners, were white. The teams recruited white players and didn’t look at other colored players as viable talent. Once Branch Rickey saw the talent AND character of Jackie Robinson, a new (although already existing) pool of talent became available to enhance his team win baseball games. Now, the MLB scours the globe for talent in all baseball fields in Latin America, Asia and other parts of the globe to draft, develop and help teams win games. DEI is not about diversity, equity and inclusion. It’s about finding the best not from just one pool (one race-white, one gender-male, one creed-Christian, etc.), but from all pools of talent.
