Will Tesla Have Robotaxi Remote Control Centers?

preview_player

A recent Tesla report to the Australian government hints at Robotaxi plans, including Remote Operation and Control, raising questions about a possible remote monitoring center. Tesla also suggests that as autonomy advances, regulations should focus more on safety. For example, will seatbelts be necessary if passengers are lying down in an autonomous vehicle?

Seatbelts are needed in case the car is violently hit by another vehicle.
Great video. Thanks!

Luddites are opposed to any innovation which displaces workers.
Imagine the cost of a bed sheet if it was still woven by hand.
Imagine the future cost of goods if we don’t have the added labor of truckers.

I think Tesla may consider adopting or making a variation of airplane first class seating in which the seats can be upright when passengers are awake and want to sit up as well as the seat being able to flatten for passengers to sleep. In this scenario, Seatbelts would still be required (for sure when passengers sit up, for standard safety reasons in cars) and also perhaps design the seat belts so that they can be on the passenger when laying flat and sleeping, for safety.

Fascinating discussion. I never thought about any of these considerations before. Planning for a new world of transport.

For OTR trucks to work, Tesla would have to also make the trailer. This so the trailer and struck wheels can turn independently like Cybertruck, only much more turn. This to back into docks, get around corners, etc.

Driving a tractor trailer in the city to every dock in the city is much more complicated than driving a car.

Tesla, making the trailer greatly simplifies the problem. Remote drivers may also need the extra wheel turning dynamics for stuck tractor trailers.

As a bonus, Tesla can also put solar panels on roof of the trailers increasing range and charging the tractor battery while parked.

Regarding seatbelts, it doesn’t matter how safe RT is, it can always be struck by a human driver.

Tesla should suggest a global standard for discussion and to get ahead of the game

Laying down in moving vehicle, you would have a safety net that covers whole body and buckles in two spots like a seat belt.

My direct experience as OTR truck driver, driving team 24 hrs/day. One person drives the other sleeps in a sleeper berth.

This is actually the law, not saying everyone actually uses it.

Makes no sense to not use a restraining device, just because you are laying down.

Teleoperating the vehicle when edge cases occur, isn't just a form of safety, its also a form of training. Every take over the car will learn from it.

So much for the supposedly superior Tesla FSD software. Sure it doesn’t require detailed maps but still needs the world’s largest computer AND remote operators…..

Herbert, we will always require seat belts for safety. The only time seat belts will be out of the picture will be when no one is allowed to drive

Tesla should ask for remote guidance systems for self driving cars to be rated for safety per call center and per type of system on a comparable basis and published.

So consumers can shop safest systems AND safest remote control systems.

The reason people have to wear seatbelts is not because they are seating upright. Its just a way to prevent death and life long injuries.
Not needed if you are laying down should give you a “clue”

We don't have to wear seatbelts on Buses & Trains?
What's the big deal?

As we all invest in FSD/Autonomy it will not happen untill the regulations are in place.

Will passengers have a panic or help button to request help?

They should have a paid option for remote operation center if you click a button on phone ap. If not the owner will be alerted and they need to control it with their ap.

I think Tesla probably needs to either self insure or purchase an umbrella liability insurance policy. If the car causes an at fault accident then Tesla will bear the liability. So long as they think the risk is much lower than a standard vehicle then they can pass this insurance on to customers piecemeal for Tesla owned taxis or car owners for vehicles that are not owned by Tesla. They could charge insurance by the mile since they would have very good and uniform data on risk per mile. Driver variability would no longer be an issue and the insurance cost should be lower.
