I used to play with a blues artist, and the horn stabs we always played opened my ears up. The stab was always usually the root. Now, I just imagine a stab, and that's usually the key.

Thanks, Jeff; great "unorthodox" methods to determine key centers of songs - each method I'll certainly try.

In China we predominantly learned Solfege (movable do) so with time I hear almost all songs in Solfege. It comes in handy when trying to figure out the key of a song. The "most resolved note" that you are talking about to me is the "do" of the song~

Wow! Jeff, you have no idea how much of a light-bulb moment this one video was for me! I'm try to veer more into composition and harmony. After being away from music 20+ years, this time around I've really been trying to FOCUS on the ears and note/interval recognition. I've always been intimidated by the study of harmony, specifically being able to harmonize any given melody I might conceive. While one video doesn't solve everything (what one would?), this seemingly obvious method you've demonstrated here, for me at least, pulls back that veil I have always allowed toshroud ANYTHING to do with figuring out harmonies (key centers), somewhat demystifying the process, in general. Can't thank you enough :)

Im learning a lot from your vids Jeff. Really honing my sax improv skills.

Anyways, to put in on another perspective, since most people know "do-re-mi-fa-sol", easiest to find the base key is to find the "do" of the melody :)

How can I "Like" this video more than once? This is the best explanation If found on how to find the key of a song. All of your videos are great but this one is even particularly outstanding

Kinda what I've been doing since being in band. Just find and imagine the lowest tone. Listening to the bassline of any song helps for days! lol

Greetings! I was wondering....when is it necessary to "find" the tonic key of a song when you can start a song on any tonic key of your own choice (particularly when we are playing songs by ear)? I heard that recording studios will often digitally transpose a song to change up and give it a certain feel, and that artists will change the key to better match their individual vocal range. Given these reasons, I'm having a hard time coming up with a list of good reasons for identifying the key to a song. I was scratching my head when one of the YouTube videos on this topic claimed that finding the key to a song is one of the most important skills in learning to play music.

The only reason I can come up with is that a person may not know how to "pick" their own key and figure out which note to start the song's melody so that they end up playing the song in the chosen key (which would be a good topic to cover in a video). The other reason I can think of is that people are simply assuming that the key of the recorded song is the optimal key for playing the song - which is not always the case as mentioned above).

Of the nine YouTube videos I've reviewed so far on how to find the key, none of them identify/discuss the reasons for learning how to identify the key (tonic note) of a song. Addressing this question at the beginning of this video would be helpful to our viewers. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the reasons for find the key to song. :-)

P.S. As hinted in your video description, "does it really matter?"

Hi Jeff, wanted to ask you whether finding the center key only work for a single chord music? does it also work for jazz music where there is several chord in loop? Or i have to find each center key for each chord in modern music?
