The Root of All Evil - Dream Theater - Drum Cover (12 Step Suite)

Yo wassup guys, here I am with the Twelve-step's next chapter!
This is my rendition of The Root of All Evil, the energizing opening track from Dream Theater's Octavarium album.

For recording this track back in 2004, Mike Portnoy used his Hammer of the Gods (a tribute to Led Zeppelin) kit. Basically it was a kind of John Bonham's replica drumset custom made for him by Tama.
Huge sizes, brass snare, a single kick pedal (!) and "just" a few big cymbals. Probably the most iconic rock'n'roll configuration of all time and really fun to play.

After Train of Thought, the band decided to make a different album, with a more melodic and classic prog sound, shorter songs (except for the title track!) and a more "commercial" approach.
The result is this great album, I'd say one of my favourites from their catalog! And I've also had the pleasure to watch (and hear) them performing it live in its entirity: it was Halloween 2005 in Rome and the concert was incredible (as always I'd say eheh!).

As you may know, this is part of DT's Twelve-step Suite (a set of 5 songs which deal with MP's past experience of alcoholism) and the song features steps six and seven (“Ready” and “Remove”). We're in the middle of the road, it's been really fun so far!

For the drumset, this time I played a very similar configuration to the one that MP used in the studio (and then live...with the Albino Monster!) but with smaller, and more regular sizes.
The snare drum is exactly the same and I'm talking about a Power Metal Brass snare in 14" x 6,5" made by Tama in those years and still here in my studio...huge sound, ultra heavy weight and badass look. I still love it, even though I'd have preferred die-casts hoops on it...but no big deal :)

Alright, that's all folks...enjoy, let me know what you guys think and, as always, thanks for the support!

I am going to see Mike Portnoy play the 12 steps live! Also, sick cover and sick kit!

This is not only a travel through the 12 Step Suite... It's a travel through MP's drum kits (or half of each, sometimes haha). Awesome, Vadrum.

Never thought you could cover DT without double bass or splashes. Yet, you chose the perfect song to cover with this kit of yours, and you nailed it!

Is it going to be a thing that you use a different drumkit configuration for each part of the 12-step suite?

Because if it is, that's awesome!!

Oh, nice! You changed the kit to match the song. Gotta say, I'm really feeling the acrylic set by now!

Would be nice to see you doing some covers from the SC album as well that being the case. I'm not getting my hopes up too high though! Doing the 12 Step Suite is already a HUGE undertaking and a massive excursion to Dream Theater territory. Thanks for this! :D

This guy's tuning is absolutely insane. Please do a video on how the hell you got that snare and kick sound.

Perfect cover, it just never occurred to me how dull single bass really is in this particular style. I guess it had to be tried back then, but no one is taking my double pedal away from me :)
