When asked about the human rights and democratic issues in India, Joe Biden said he and Indian prime minister Narendra Modi had spoken about democratic values and were 'straightforward with each other.'

Modi said he was surprised by the critique, adding 'there is absolutely no space for discrimination.'

Thousands of Indian Americans and other guests had gathered on the White House South Lawn to greet Modi on Thursday morning, ahead of the private meeting between the two heads of state. At the same time, dozens of demonstrators descended near the White House gates in protest against the visit.

Human rights advocates have criticized Modi and his party, the BJP, for fuelling the rise of violence associated with Hindu nationalism and discriminating against India’s Muslim minority

So, he dodged the question and denied the reality of the situation. Great choice to host him at the white house for sure...

What has happened to Washington Post ? Their journalist is concerned about calling Xi as dictator and ask agenda driven question on India which has over 2000 political parties and home to all religions and faiths including non-believers/atheist. What has happened to journalism in American or West?
They are showing sympathy & concern for a brutal dictator and beating down on democratically elected leader.

Modi's reply was super! The same people are also oppressed in Europe because Europeans have become tired of taking these people in their homes.

What a silly question from the reporter, which modi has answered so many times. Look into Pakistan if you want to see minority rights discrimination, but somehow the Guardian and others fail to do….can’t imagine why

Modiji was too diplomatic. I wish Eam Jaishankar was asked this question and he would have devoured the journalist for his breakfast.
