Mechanical Design: Threaded Inserts
Показать описание
Threaded inserts allow for stronger threads in a material/part than would otherwise be possible based on the base part material’s properties. For example, you might have a plastic part in which you want very strong threads. Plastic parts can be directly threaded, but they are weak (because plastic is typically considered a non-structural material, usually). In this case a metal threaded insert can be placed in the plastic. Thus, the designer enjoys the lower cost and weight associated with a plastic part, but the higher strength of steel threads. Of course, threaded inserts can be placed in metal parts, as well (this is especially common in Aluminum parts where galling could occur if steel fasteners were placed directly on Aluminum threads). Threaded inserts can also be placed in materials that otherwise simply cannot be threaded, such as wood.
