On October 12, we had the honor of welcoming Courtney Wages, Miss Kansas, to the Helen Keller National Center. She toured the campus, met with staff, and spent time speaking with some of our DeafBlind participants.

Courtney is the Community Outreach Manager for Envision and a dedicated advocate for the blind and low vision communities. We appreciate her spending time learning about the unique needs of the DeafBlind community and we applaud her commitment to raising awareness and elevating programs and services that enable those with visual impairments to thrive.

Good luck, Courtney, in the upcoming Miss America Pageant! We’ll be cheering for you.

Video Transcript:
Hello, my name is C O U R T N E Y, Courtney, and I am Miss Kansas 2023. And I was able to come visit today at Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Youth and Adults. And what an eye-opening opportunity for me. Currently, as Miss Kansas, I advocate for people who are blind or visually impaired. But being able to witness the DeafBlind community has been an opportunity that I will never forget.

And so being able to work with the staff and the students and hear where each and every one of you have come from different walks of life and the opportunities that you are given to be successful in your own endeavors is truly remarkable. So thank you for all that you do for not only opening my eyes, but being able to advocate you on the Miss America stage. I am super excited to do so. I hope to visit with you all soon.
