I read today that banks will put a 4 day hold on transfers they consider suspicious. I've already had trouble paying contractors for work at my house where the bank wasn't happy to make the transfer until I'd phoned them and answered about a hundred questions. I can see this happening with car purchase now.

I wish the big retailers would put effort into their descriptions. Colour and price doesn't do it for me.... Lack of effort in an advert says enough about the seller to me.

Your point #10 is very well made. I was recently caught out with this but not when selling. The car was written off but repaired. The V5 was given to insurers driver and I assumed that was that. It was repaired and new owner generated a PCN. You can guess the rest.

I hate the car garages that either take weeks to put more than 1 picture up. Or the ones that have a full-on essay about their garage is the best garage in the land with the last sentance being. Red, £12.995. And nothing else.

To expect a buyer to accompany you to a bank to allow you to check if notes are genuine is not something any seller would agree to.

Not putting basic details on an ad is number 1.
What engine ? Miles ? MOT ?

Write out a proper receipt, signed, two copies, with words alluding to 'sold as seen', 'no warranty' etc. Also keep copies of the history. Too many horror stories of buyers trying it on with sellers after the fact, expecting trader levels of cover.

I'm mostly interested in service history, MOT history and any work carried out on the car as well as the tyres it's got on especially if it's a premium car. You see a high performance car rocking budget tyres they're not looking after it guranteed. If I see a car failing an MOT for stupid things like bulbs, tyres and brakes that also concerns me as these are all things that should have been checked by the owner before the MOT was carried out.

Got scammed when I sold my car from home, head gasket failed on the test drive, steam coming from exhaust, engine oil in the coolant expansion tank. Knocked me down massively, before I realised that when "looking around the car" while the wife distracted me, hubby had squirted water into the exhaust back box and on returning poured oil into the cooling system. What a plonker was I

Never buy of dealers. They will always tell you loads of bullshit, like we put new tyres and brakes which cost us £1000, no It does cost them anything because your going to pay for it. Remember other than leather seats all other options are worthless. Just because it's fully loaded doesn't make the car more expensive. It does make it more desirable but not expensive so if the dealer trying to get more than the car's worth, walk away. Never buy of ebay or Facebook. Avoid cities like Birmingham (definitely Birmingham) Luton, Bradford ect. Don't buy of Asians especially if it's a BMW, AUDI or Mercedes ( want maximum money and it will be trashed to a inch of it's life). Avoid anyone with a foreign accent ( pikes, Polish, Romanians ect) and if possible steer well clear of dodgy council estates. Remember if there is a particular car / model you want, just keep in mind there are plenty of them. Don't ever rush to buy the 1st one. If you're buying privately always check out the type of area your buying from. People on expensive estates tend to look after, service and keep there car's in good order as there mostly older couples and you can get a bargain as they don't need the money. I brought a 2016 E class Mercedes convertible from a small village in Cornwall from a older couple for £13000 with 33k on the clock with full Mercedes history. Bargain 😊😊😊😊😊

I have used bank transfer a few times and it has been ok, but I have heard a few horror stories, I recently bought a caravan for £7000 on a Sunday and used bank transfer fortunately it went well, but the sad reality is there is the potential of a delay in the funds reaching the sellers account + all the inconvenience and anxiety. Cash has got to be the best way of doing deals.

With transfers from bank apps it’s treated as a faster payment which usually takes a minute or two or at worst 2 hours.

The only possible issue is if it’s a high value car they might want proof of entitlement to the funds.

Screenshot the ad. Screenshot the receipt ( signed ) and as much as you can to show you sold a car and are due the money.

That takes a minute or two but can save you a bucket load of trouble

Source? Work for a uk digital bank.
