Agree, especially on the fabric part. You can not simply pair a tweed suit with a worsted waistcoat. Always keep in mind fabric, texture, and especiallu the social language of the clothes. Tweeds, cords, cavalry twills, whipcords, and moleskins work great together

Depends on the colour and style. A brocade vest looks great with a velvet sport coat. A dark plaid vest might work with a tweed jacket but a wool sweater vest or sleeveless cardigan would be better. If the sport coat is striped a plain vest in a neutral colour is the only safe option
