Apollo 8 Earthrise simulation

Using elevation data and images from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, this animation simulates the view of the Apollo 8 astronauts on December 24, 1968 as they orbited the Moon, rounding the far side to the near side: looking west to see the Earth rising over the lunar horizon. Two iconic photos were taken by Lunar Module pilot Bill Anders: The first was greyscale, the second color. The animation pauses momentarily and overlays the photos at the appropriate times (note the delay between the two; Anders had to swap out the film in the camera to insert a color cartridge).
