I was 14 when this flight happened and this picture dramatically changed the way many people thought of the earth. Until then, it had always filled the picture one way or another. But seeing that beautiful coloured planet against the stark black and grey of everything else made people see how special and vulnerable it is.

Apollo 8 did not do a figure 8 loop around the moon. They made 10 orbits on Christmas Eve. This was the most dangerous part requiring 2 critical burns on the backside of the moon, 1 to get in the correct orbit and 1 to escape.
