Sub-saharan African migrants expelled from Tunisia say they were saved by Libyan border guards

“They say they want to kill me because I'm black."
A sub-Saharan African migrant claims to have been beaten and shot at by Tunisian guards who left him and a group of other black migrants in an uninhabited area near the Libyan border town of Al-Assah. The group were later picked up by Libyan border guards who gave them water and shelter, as they had been left in the scorching summer heat for days.
Up to 700 sub-Saharan Africans were expelled from the southeastern Tunisian city this month and sent to the desert border region between Libya and Tunisia without food or water.
Racial tensions in Tunisia are on the rise, as the number of sub-Saharan African migrants travelling to the North African country in a bid to cross the Mediterranean into Europe has increased.
