Why Do Gums HURT & BLEED After Flossing?

Let's talk about WHY flossing might hurt your gums and teeth
...and how to make it STOP!

If your teeth are sore after flossing, the protocol for home care is the same as if you had any other type of teeth sensitivity. Most importantly, we want to do everything we can to keep that tartar layer from forming back over your teeth. Make sure you’re brushing at least twice a day, particularly along the gumlines on both the inside and outside of your teeth (where plaque tends to build up first.)

Bleeding gums after flossing is not normal!

When flossing, reach just under the gums to disrupt soft plaque before it hardens into tartar. Make sure you are hugging. each tooth. Do NOT pop floss up and down! After 10 days of flossing, you shouldn't feel any discomfort anymore!

recently started a deep clean, and there was a shocking amount of blood when they finished. Def motivated me to keep my gums healthier through daily flossing

I noticed how much firmer my gums became when I upped my flossing game. I’ll be honest, I used to be a saw flosser until I learned the c-shape technique. Love this channel!!

i'm over-flossing. i'm flossing too hard. i used to work in a dental office as an assistant and i have generalized anxiety. i do floss, my gums don't bleed, but i've got recession that is getting worse. i am addicted to self-harming my gums with floss and flossing tools. i think a professional cleaning will actually help the situation. Sometimes i start flossing because my gums feel irritated. So i need to do something differently so my gums don't feel irritated. i also do it when i'm under extreme stress, like final exams.

I love the lifting analogy because I love to lift but I am discouraged by the annoyance of flossing

As a newly licensed hygienist, I love that comparison! Definitely going to start using it!

Hi, Whitney! My left arm is impaired due to a stroke, so I use floss picks since it’s simple to do with one hand. Do you have a video on how to properly floss with those?

I'm on day 2 of flossing. Gums bled less today than they did yesterday. Thank you for the videos.

I think flossing is super fun for some reason. But brushing my teeth is a chore. Weird

Often times chronic halitosis (aka bad breath) comes from inflamed and sensitive gums. When you brush your teeth you actually strike open the gum and bleed a little bit into your mouth without noticing it and it sort of without having a better way of putting it rots a little bit and stinks really bad in your breath. Once you start flossing your teeth will bleed for days. But if you continue with it after about 2 weeks your gums will tighten up and stop being sore and your bad breath goes away. I hope this helps somebody. Great video by the way! Thank you!

I only had one bleed and it didn’t the second day. The whole set feels good. I always brush but most forget time to time.

I've recently just started flossing with floss and a waterpik after finding your channel (I brush and use mouthwash twice a day but haven't flossed). I have a SEVERE fear of going to the dentist because I'm scared of pain and haven't been to one in years because of that fear. Your channel is definitely making me take my dental health seriously, and I want to try to conquer that fear, so thank you!

I just visited the dentist last month, and the dentist said I was flossing improperly and then she proceeded to show me exactly how. I have been following my dentist’s directions on flossing for a month now, but suddenly within the past couple weeks, my gums are swollen and sore all the time. I should say that BEFORE my dentist appointments last month, I flossed and brushed each day as well and had no pain previously. Do what’s going on with my gums right now?

Thanks! You know, I feel like dental care providers should REALLY make this a point to get across. Growing up, everyone tells you to floss and do it often. Well, hearing that, when compared to the experiences of others flossing for me made me immediately look at my dentist and say "uh, hell no" (In my head of course). Now, if a dentist would have said "Look, I know that flossing may have hurt but that's because your teeth and gums are so weak right now. You need to continue to floss so that your teeth and gums become stronger and the pain you experienced today will gradually become less and less over time. You could potentially have the strongest, healthiest and best looking teeth and gums at your school in time little Tyson!" I could have gotten behind that much earlier and saved myself some time. lol
