How to Play G Major Chord on Guitar The Right Way!

In this beginner guitar lesson, I teach you how to play a G chord on guitar in a better way. Often one of the biggest challenges beginners struggle with when learning how to play guitar, is switching from one chord to another smoothly. If you are a beginner guitar player, this is going to be a very important lesson, because this will be a game changer when it comes to learning how to change guitar chords smoothly.

Often the traditional way to play a G chord makes it difficult to switch from one chord to another, because all of the fingers have to change position. If you learn how to play the G chord in the way I will show you in this lesson, you will find switching to other chords much easier because you will use common fingers (fingers that are in the same position for both chords)

If you are a beginner guitar player and trying to learn how to play a G chord on guitar, you don't want to miss this guitar lesson.

I've been practicing this method after learning the regular g chord for a long time and found it to sound much "fuller." I'll try the c add9 as well. My fingers don't thank you, but I do.😊

I found this very interesting. I'm a beginner that has been practicing diligently for about 4 months. I am an older adult with small hands and short fingers and am having problems muting the A string with my 2nd finger while trying to play the G chord.

I was taught this G when I first started playing. I now find the "normal" G a bit awkward. Your G is my go- to. Mind you, I technically it's called a "G Major" but as an alternative it fits perfectly. Love your way of teaching, thanks. Subscribed 👍

This is a very practical way of switching between chords quickly and accurately.

Alice in Chains' "Nutshell" is that Em7, leave your fingers there for a Gmaj, hit a quick Dmaj, then that Cadd9.
I play a Gmaj with my ring finger (no pinky) for the final chorus of the Johnny Cash version of "Hurt" because it sounds more hollow or flimsy and in my opinion matches the lyrics.
I enjoyed your video!

Great tip I always struggle going to c chord old way thanks!

Awesome. On some songs, I find it sounds better when going from Gmaj to C the traditional Cmaj sounds better and the Cadd9 is okay when going from Dmaj to Cadd9.

Again on some songs and also when playing just the guitar. When other instruments come along, I don't mind going from Gmaj to Cadd9 in those same lyrics.

How much of a difference is the C add 9 coming out of the four finger G versus a standard c chord?

I've been using the four finger G to the C and I've been doing okay it sounds pretty good

But a perfect example is quick 2 strum of a c chord right to a two strum of a G chord
And then a d and right back to G.

But it has to change really quick
But I wondered is there really a difference in tonality between the c and C add 9 if you do it that way?

If you're wondering what I'm doing it's Hal Ketchum Small Town Saturday Night the introduction with the first Fret capo'd
I'm finding those four finger one seemed to work really good and ring nice.
But it does call for a c and not a Cadd9

I just use my ring finger to barre the B and high E strings and play it as a four string chord, with my thumb muting the two lowest strings...although once in a while I'll fret the A string with my thumb and play it as a 5-string chord. In both cases that frees up my index, middle, and pinky fingers to go for the next chord. But being self-taught I'm full of bad habits...

Its actually a Gadd9 but its all the same. I use the b string as a suspend note from time to time but its often the A string.

I really need help as I don't want to give up trying to learn guitar, but without someone to help I just may have to. My problem is that I have small hands. As IamMorrison says if you don't have our tiny sized hands you just can't relate. So a C-Chord is doable for me on 25.5in scale guitar but getting to a different chord is a struggle. Not a serious problem I am just bringing that up. Where my problem lies is my wrist to the tip of my longest finger is 6.5 inches. Hard to make chords. Now here is the one that made me quit for six months as I was in 24x7 pain with a loss of mobility and that is I cannot get calluses. It is a hereditary issue as they begin to grow, and I go to bed one day to wake up to baby soft fingertips again where everything is painful. SO painful that I do bad things, subconsciously, to stop the pain and it hurts my wrist and thumb joints. How can I play the guitar without calluses? I ask because with them the notes ring out more, but when they go back to soft the strings around the touching fingers are dead due to the pudge caused my a soft pressing onto a hard. I do not have Gorilla grip/Kung-Fu death grip as I work hard to not.

My middle finger will Not arch over the a string I literally can't make my hand move any way that pushed the high strings down and still keeps my middle finger outta the way. Makes me so mad when ppl are like "g chord is the easiest" like no.... no it isn't

but why not bar g not hard with practice you have the the c right below plus you can have major minor easily e is right before g 3 frets away and the em7 is even easier with just fretting 5 sting 2nd fret you also have major 7th transition easier

your fingers are doing too much extra work

its best to always practice scales you find that their are much easier ways to make chords while adding solos

Sounds ok but the c major sounds way better than the cadd9. Cadd9 is missing sounds and just to
Me in my opinion doesn’t sound right in most songs.
