What really blows my mind about this is thinking about ancient animals that would have been around during shorter days... there's so much that comes to mind when one is thinking about dinosaurs or early reptiles and fish, and how different the world was for them, but the thought that they might not have even had 24-hour days never crossed my mind. (Granted, the difference would have been relatively smaller if I've got my timelines right, but it's still mind-boggling.)

Some great work was done by John Wells on Devonian rugose corals, where he demonstrated convincingly using growth rings in the corals that a Devonian year was about 400 days. Which is generally in agreement with what has been said here.

So the date is about (24 - length of day) * 250 MYA, as long as it's not earlier than the Neoproterozoic Era. That's a useful estimator for time travellers.

Finally, an excuse to talk about pacific mythology!
A common tale tells of the demigod/hero Maūi (yes, the same one as in Moana) slowing the sun’s passage to make the day longer

Me: complains about not having enough time in the day.
Homo erectus: back in my day...

As you get older it seems like there's much less time in a day than when you were a kid or even in your twenties 😂

Hello, new (at least new to me) host person! I like your style! Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

I dont think you could describe it as relatively new or a lot shorter. A billion years is a pretty significant amount of time, even on the cosmic scale.

Aactually recently the earths rotation has been speeding up.

Back when the moon was a huge lava ball in the sky days were about six to eight hours long. It's longer than the lifetime of the sun but eventually the moon and earth would be tidally locked to each other.

It's little tidbits of scientific knowledge like these that the internet was made for! I love that I'm in my mid 30s and still have SO MUCH MORE knowledge to learn! 😄

I knew we used to have 21 hour says because of the Earth’s rotation but 19 is a new record!

Finally! A PBS Eons presenter who speaks at an understandable pace (think Tom Scott). I love PBS Eons and the topics, but the presenters speak so quickly it’s difficult to process everything that’s being said. Still love and subscribe to the channel.

Ergo, there will only be annular solar eclipses as the moon moves farther away from the Earth.

how long until we get to a 26 hour day? I think if it wasn't for the fixed work schedule, that day length would work best for me. Sleep for ~8 hours, be awake for ~18

As the core cools and the diameter contracts we should pick up a little rotational speed.
