CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Malena (Monica Bellucci) is surprised to be welcomed back with open arms after the way she was chased out of town.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A young man's infatuation for a beautiful older woman blooms amidst the outbreak of World War II in this bittersweet comedy-drama from Italy. Renato (Giuseppe Sulfaro) is a 13-year-old boy growing up in a small Sicilian community. Mussolini has risen to power and has declared war upon England and France, but Renato has other things on his mind -- mostly girls. While hanging out with his friends by the seashore, Renato spies Malèna (Monica Bellucci), the daughter of one of his schoolteachers, whose husband Nino (Gaetano Aronica) is fighting with Mussolini's army. Renato is immediately obsessed with Malèna and follows her like a lost puppy, spying on her whenever circumstances permit and imagining her as his co-star in elaborate erotic fantasies inspired by his favorite movies. Renato, however, is hardly the only man in town to be struck by Malèna's charms, and her beauty leads to resentment from the women of the community. Malèna's circumstances take a turn for the worst after her husband is reported to have died in combat, and she is forced to resort to prostitution to survive; she is brutally attacked by a pack of angry matrons and driven from town. Renato tries to keep track of her, and has some less than encouraging news to report when Nino turns out to be alive and finds his spouse is missing. Malèna was written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, best known for the art-house hit Nuovo Cinema Paradiso; Malèna was released in Europe at 106 minutes, while the American version was edited by ten minutes to tighten the pace and remove nudity and sexual material considered too strong for the U.S. marketplace.

They gossiped terrible things about her, lied at court, they starved her and drove her to prostitution then beat her and humiliated her for it. And to 'make it up' for it and only after she decided to stop caring for her looks they give her a jacket... The jealousy is unreal in this world.

She has to change herself, be less feminine, less colourful, so they don't feel threaten by her and punish her. Change to fit into a society of hypocrites. This movie is so sad.

This is really sad. Those women only accept her back because now they don't see her as a threat anymore since she's less beautiful according to them, has a husband, and dresses more like them. It's not an empowering scene, but a sad one that shows those backward values don't change.

Wow this makes me so angry. The women only embraced now that she is older, got some wrinkles, put on weight, and got her husband back. Now that she is no longer as attractive and doesn’t intimidate them with her youth and beauty and also has her husband they accept her. I hate those women. They were jealous and envious of her beauty !

That look she gave to the women in the marketplace before she responds to their greeting says it all. Sometimes, the eyes can say so much more than words.

I wish she didn't have to dress like everybody else to get respect

Insecure women always tries to bring down a beautiful woman

Look at those crowd of women saying hi to Malena with no conscience, just trying to get away from their guilt towards Malena. So hypocritical

the way she’s still more beautiful than everyone else in the market

The way Malena looks at those women after telling her good morning. Like “wow, after you beat me up and humiliated me in front of everyone you’re going to be nice now” I hate those women.

I cried so hard at this scene, its simple but so painful.Really shows how merciless and manipulative people can become.

I love how she gets given a blazer that's pretty much exact to the one she was already wearing hehe

Sometimes is true that a person ugly inside is also a person ugly outside. Sometimes, not always.

I think it was because she had her husband back, and they always knew she always was faithful & loyal to her man no matter what.

They started to feel threatened when she was informed of her husband's death, which meant she was available again.

They finally accept her as she's no longer as beautiful as she once was. But they fail to see she will ALWAYS be more beautiful than any of them, inside and out.

Its because they were hypocrites wanting to brush their earlier viscious behavior under the rug, expecting her to forgive them, treating her politely, while still gossiping about her behind her back.
Typical small town behavior

I like how by the time the movie ends we still really don't know much about what Malena is actually like. Even her last scene with Renato reveals little to none. Did she recognize him as one of the lovesick teenage boys? What did she think of his 'good luck?' Did she perceive its warmth or did she think that it was merely renato being polite?
Also it was lovely how by the end there are no more men and lovesick teenagers in bicycles gawking at her but Renato still watches her.

So they attack her and then greets her, when she comes back?

To look at their hypocritical faces and correspond on their pathetic greeting as nothing happened, thats courage. Malena is my HERO!

I would have preferred seeing her return in the same glamorous outfits/style. All I see here is that she let those women change her.
