Former Crosfield operator here. I have mounted thousands of slides on drums over my years in industry. Used to mount 30 - 40 35mm slides in one go using a film overlay and the roller on the mounting bench. Used basic liquid paraffin and cleaned up with anchor film cleaner. We were expected to do 70-100 scans during a 7 hour shift.

Thanks for putting this together. I still really like drum scans, but don't get to do enough of them these days.

I had to smile when I saw the same antique MacBeth light box that I still use.

Thank you for the time you've spent showing us how to do the things the right way,

what a nice workshop you have, and wonderful film-set-light indeed. you show what is most important with drum scanning: patience and care. no wonder that technique dies as these virtues are no longer en vogue. but we, being over 50, can afford it ;-)

Not the way I usually mount film but in saying that I have been doing it for a long time. This method would be super easy for those starting out in drum scanning though so full credit to you for making a great video!

Great video. You look very natural in front of the camera so hopefully you make more videos like this.

You've made a tricky job 10 times harder. Ditch the roller! You don't need it.
I spent 11 years Drum scanning and wet mounting. Never ever did it that way. You'd be lucky to do 20 scans a day like that!

I'm living in an island, and here is impossible to buy proper fluid mount, there are any substitute?

this is the classic way of doing with mylar, but for large format it is not more difficult to do it without and save the plastic waste. and: i do well with cheap stuff: parafine oil to mount, petroleum ether to clean both film + drum, both from the pharmacy (half a litre of oil and 5 litres of p-e will do for hundreds of scans) + kleenex, that's it. keep on drum-scanning!

Hi Gale! I dont know if you are still active here but what brand/model of mounting station is that? I too have a ScanMate 5000 but I have yet to find a suitable mounting station for that drum.

I think they do still make drums, pro labs have drum scanners.

Did they ever make any glass drums that are more durable?

As an ex-professional industrial drum scanner operator using Crossfield and Hell scanners I never have seen it done like this. I know one thing my old employers would have been less than happy with the methods you have adopted. I would have been out of work faster than a bullet using your system.

Someone selling a Colorgetter II Drum Scanner for $55 on craigslist.. so tempted to get it.. they say it's for parts (doesn't work).. seems like a steal though.. Probably could part it out and get some good money for all the parts on ebay? I resell on ebay.

I'd have liked to see the results. By the way, were those positives or did my eyes deceive me?
