Roger Waters - The Gunner's Dream

Last night I watched the 2013 documentary film
"The Man Who Saved The World”
The man’s name is Stanislav Petrov.
The year before Stanislav saved the World
In the year 1982 I wrote a song
“The Gunner’s Dream”
It’s weird to think that had Stanislav not been
In the right place at the right time
None of us would be alive
No one under the age of 37
Would have have been born at all.
It is acknowledged by all but the cretins amongst us
That nuclear arms have no value
It is also acknowledged that
They are a ticking bomb
And we ignore them at our peril
Accidents happen
The Stanislavs of this world are a rare breed.
We’ve been extraordinarily lucky.
If I ruled the world, I would heed the words of the wise
I would get rid of nuclear weapons
First thing tomorrow morning.
On Dr. King’s name day.
Of course no-one can rule the world
The world cannot be ruled
It can only be loved and respected and shared.
If we’re still here in the morning
So here is a new recording and video of
"The Gunner’s Dream"
As a gift from me and my lovely band and our friends
To you
With our love
R.

______
Lyrics:
Floating down, through the clouds
Memories come rushing up to meet me now
But in the space between the heavens
And the corner of some foreign field
I had a dream
I had a dream
Goodbye Max, goodbye Ma
After the service, when you're walking slowly to the car
And the silver in her hair shines in the cold November air
You hear the tolling bell and touch the silk in your lapel
And as the teardrops rise to meet the comfort of the band
You take her frail hand
And hold on to the dream
A place to stay, enough to eat
Somewhere, old heroes shuffle safely down the street
Where you can speak out loud about your doubts and fears
And what's more, no one ever disappears
You never hear their standard issue kicking in your door
You can relax on both sides of the tracks
And maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control
And everyone has recourse to the law
And no one kills the children anymore
No one kills the children anymore
Night after night, going 'round and 'round my brain
His dream is driving me insane
In the corner of some foreign field
The gunner sleeps tonight
What's done is done
We cannot just write off his final scene
Take heed of the dream
Take heed

The final Cut is a criminally underrated album. It’s actually a masterpiece, regardless of the politics within the band at the time!

Roger, this I want you to know, all my memories, as an Iranian Child stuck in Denmark as re refugee...looking at the skies and wishing to God that I could be on one of those planes to anywhere....you were right in my ears...my Sony can tell you that my life would not be the same without you. Its hard to cry for a man, but you made it very simple for me in my alone time...Thank you! I am 52 now and in Los Angeles but my 3 kids took after me and all love Uncle Roger

Our 35 yr old son died from a brain bleed three weeks ago and this was one of his favourite songs that we played at his funeral., along with "wish you were here" He was always loved and forever remembered.

The climax of this song never fails to make me teary-eyed.

The Final Cut is more relevant than ever now, one of the few albums out there that makes me cry.

When people say that they don't like the Final Cut, I just immediately wrote off their taste in music. This is one of the most powerful pieces of music ever written.

"In the corner of some foreign field, the gunner sleeps tonight." That line always gives me chills... All those men and women who died fighting in wars, buried in unknown graves, never to return home. A beautiful tribute to them.

I am 63 years old and have been living on this music, singing, shouting, crying along every single album. I wish I could return some kind of favor.

Listening to this, 4 years after posted, it's still relevant.
Thank you, Roger Waters, for consistently fighting for justice, especially for the Palestinians! And for your music, of course.

The voice is better than it was in 1983. Superb version. The line, “And no one kills the children anymore” stills sends shivers up my spine, 38 years later. Bravo Roger, still kicking ass at 77!

Roger, I don’t know if you will ever see this, but thank you for this song. I am an Iraq war veteran and this song has gotten me through some dark times. I appreciate you very much. Thank you.
