A Greater Toronto Area mother is hoping to raise public awareness about a disease that is rarely transmitted by mosquitos. Her child was hospitalized for more than a month after getting a mosquito bite.

Kathryn McKissock never thought letting her six-year-old son play outside their Oshawa, Ont., home could lead to him developing a life-threatening disease.

McKissock tells Global News she noticed a mosquito bite on her son, Cameron, after Canada Day. She says they didn’t look out of the ordinary, but soon after, he developed a fever and she noticed he was becoming very lethargic. As Brittany Rosen reports, his condition was worsening as the days passed.

Im happy to see he is doing ok. The same thing happened to be 6 yrs ago at age 40 and left me paralyzed on the left side, memory loss, extreme pain and other ailements . I also waited 3 to 4 weeks before going to the hospital and kept going to the clinic instead. by the time i got to the hospital the swelling on my brain was too much.. i dont remember my time in the hospital but when i was able to go home i had a pick line with 24 hr anti virals for 6weeks, i dont wish this on anyone. so if you feel off after a bite go to the hospital and dont wait
