During the college football game between Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, Texas Tech was called for a rare penalty when the refs called unsportsmanlike conduct... on the fans. The penalty came as a result of a fan throwing a water bottle on the field after a play. Texas Tech had to back 15 yards because of the actions of one of their fans. Oklahoma State went on to defeat Texas Tech 23-0.

How to help your favorite college football team win a game: Go to a road game and throw a bottle on the field so the home team gets penalized 😅

This sets a dangerous precedent. What's stopping me from wearing an opposing jersey and racking up penalties?

The problem with a penalty like that is once fans know that refs will call that, the visiting fans could start throwing stuff just to get a penalty called.

Moral of the story: Dress in the opposing team's jersey and rig the game for the good guys.

At first I thought maybe it would be a good incentive to make fans behave, then I realized how easily this could be exploited. Best to keep the penalties on the actual teams.

How do they know that they are Texas Tech fans?
What if someone trolls texas tech and poses as one of their fans?

I think the fact that this is even a discussion means NCAA needs to put more responsibility on the schools to maintain sportsmanship, and have more eyes on the stands to eject the trouble makers. This kind of thing should not have to be an issue, they have better regulations on much less important things lol

Why do the players get penalized for something completely out of their control?

Refs: *Give Texas Tech fans a penalty*
Texas Tech Fans: What're ya gonna do, disqualify us?

Edit- Holy shit 1k likes what the Hell is wrong with y'all lmao

What happened the previous week at Baylor may have made refs quicker to act. In that game, thousands of fans were on the field before the game was over, and no penalty.

I was once on an officiating crew at a high school game where we threw two fans out of the stadium. Yes, you can do that.

How do you even enforce this?
Guy dresses as home team, but is away team fan: throws bottle. "Screw the away team"
Home team: penalized
Away team: wins
Guy: I'm always here for you away team 💙 ❤

How do they know it's a Tech fan? What if a Oklahoma State fan was doing it to purposefully cause Tech to get a penalty or was simply fooling around?

As a Tennessee fan, I say we should play Texas Tech and watch chaos ensue

to the "whats stopping fans from" questions: i would imagine that security is quickly identifying the people throwing things and removing them. if it became an every down issue, i think they would just pull the players off the field and start removing fan sections wholesale
