When should you file a patent application? This video explains why it's a better business decision to wait to file a patent application until you are ready to make public disclosures, public uses, offers for sale or approach inventors. Patent rights start to be lost upon a first public disclosure, public use or offer for sale if you don't file a patent application first. Filing a patent application before approaching investors helps your pitch and lets you talk openly about your invention. Also, it's best to wait until these four triggers because it allows you to delay the cost of an initial provisional patent application, a non-provisional a year later, and then the examination process 1-3 years after that. Also, waiting to file lets you have the idea or product more developed and patentability is typically in these developed details.

In most cases provisional patents applications are pretty much a waste of time. Better to have a NDA and get to market. If you invent anything of value it will be stolen in another country in the blink of an eye as most people, even companies can't afford to patent in different countries.

I can work around any patent I see. I can read prosecution history, work around equivalents, etc. It’s basically a hobby at this point. lol.

So how would I protect my idea/product while creating it before getting my patent?

I've created a game-changing algorithm for my Master's thesis recently. I have the basic implementation done, and it's amazing. I haven't found anyone who has come up with this algorithm before, and it solves so many decades-old problems. I'm curious if I should, or could, patent it. I'm also poor, so I don't have a way to pay thousands of dollars. Are patents so expensive that obtaining one is out of my reach? If so, isn't that disparaging for those who come up with great ideas but can't monetize it because they're poor?
