As one of New York City’s early skyscrapers, and one of the first high-rise elevator buildings, the New York Tribune Building was a tragically underrated pioneer of its age. Despite its somewhat controversial opening it lived a storied life, though it later fell to the wrecking ball in 1966. This is the story of the lost New York Tribune Building.

Look what they took from us! You'd think Manhattan was bombed in a war or something.

It's honestly painful to look and see and think about what buildings used to be, and what we have torn down "for different reasons" sometimes earthquake safety measures, some for meeting modern building codes. Regardless, modern buildings are nothing compared to the amount of creativity and details that the past buildings had... I hope this modern era evolves and changes because I'm not a fan of most architecture, engineering designs, project plans, structure layouts and the manner in which what we focus on in today's American society...

That enunciator panel was incredibly modern for 1875. Pity so many amazing NYC buildings have been destroyed.

To me, architects don’t need much imagination to design today’s buildings.

The Pace University building at the site of the former Tribune Building is a poor substitute. Thank you for the educational post.

I think Hunt's most famous New York structure will be around for a long time to come. There is a rather large statue of a woman holding a torch on top of it. So I think it's safe.

I’m surprised you guys didn’t mention Horace Greeley’s role in encouraging westward migration and settlement. “Go west, young man!” There’s a city in Colorado that bears his name because of it.

Your videos about the Tribune Building and The World Building, seen right next to the Tribune Building in a number of photographs here, are so well done, containing so much historical information, providing a glimpse of Manhattan and New York that will be lost forever. I have been in the Park Row/Pace University neighborhood any number of times and will be again, I am sure. But rest assured I will be thinking of your videos every time from now on.

The Herald and Tribune merged in 1924, and the name Tribune survived until 1967 in the World Journal Tribune. Meanwhile, the International Herald Tribune, based in Paris, survived until 2013.

I disagree with the criticisms of this building. I think it was beautiful. Too bad it was torn down months before I was born. 5 Beekman street, nearby is a rare survivor of that type of architecture. It was neglected and "remuddled" by idiots for many years. Now it is absolutely wonderful to look at.
