Why Does Neptune's Moon, Triton, Orbit Backwards?

Neptune's largest moon, Triton, orbits the opposite direction of all other moons in our solar system, and no one is sure why. No, Triton is not a "Death Star" or an artificial object, but it may not have originated near Neptune.

Voyager did not 'discover' that Triton orbits retrograde - that has been known for some time. Triton was discovered in 1846. It's orbit was postulated to be the result of a close encounter with Pluto, and Triton was captured from the Pluto/Charon group flinging Pluto into a wider orbit. That close encounter could explain the features seen on Triton, Pluto and Charon.

So I went back to a book I owned as a kid, and we seem to have known Triton's orbit was retrograde LONG before Voyager 2 arrived there. So apparently my research is better than the Science Channel's.
