Making Wooden Splines The Easy Way

Before I built my computer controlled box joint jig I was experimenting with a simple jig. For this jig I needed a key that has width of my saw blade.
I felt that cutting the key on my cheap table saw using a parallel fence was too dangerous. So I came up with the idea to use my cross cut sled instead.

Back then I was using a simple piece of scrap wood that was screwed to my sled as a zero clearance stop block.

I used this method also to cut a strip that has 2 times the width of the saw blade to adjust the key on the simple box joint jig. To do this you simply cut twice when the wood piece is flipped vertical.

This idea can also be used to cut strips for wooden splines.

Solution staring most people ² in the face that most people wouldn't see till someone else shows them.

Thank you very much.

Every once in a while you run across something that makes you say "Why is something so simple not been in my brain before now." This is one of those somethings. So simple and foolproof that I am ashamed of not thinking of it myself. Thank you for putting this up. I will be using this all the time now. The fact that it works for any saw blade without using any measuring is pure genius.

I don’t know about you guys but it isn’t it more fun to make 9 cuts before you get something that’s close but requires a hammer to make it fit?

How simple yet perfect. Thanks for sharing!!!

Man, talk about making me feel stupid! Very simple solution. I’ve seen all types of jigs that would not yield the same exact consistency as this does. Thanks!
