On 1st July 2011 Montreux hosted the reunion of two master guitarists Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin with their Invitation To Illumination concert. Both musicians have been regulars at Montreux across the years but this was the first time they headlined their own concert together. The show features most of the tracks from their classic 1973 album "Love Devotion Surrender" mixed in with a wealth of other material. The evening was a showcase of supreme musical virtuosity and spirituality and typified the approach of these two great artists. It is certainly a performance not to be missed.

I went to get John McLaughlin to sign the album cover of..love devotion surrender for me after a show...which he kindly did and then he said to me. “..it’s not fully signed until you get Carlos to sign it to.” Thanks for posting

To those who like to criticize. Your time would be better spent enjoying whats good rather than focusing on what you think is bad. When you focus on the blemishes you miss everything else. I guess we all see what we want to see. Being critical is a reflection of what and who you are. I am gonna go enjoy some more of the endless supply of live music that YouTube offers, ill leave you here to peck apart a golden goose for being to yellow.

Music is art, not a skills competition. I´d like to hear the wise guys who criticized Santana playing Samba pa ti.

Never was a big fan of McLaughlin, but Santana was like having a nanny growing up. You can see the spiritual connection these two share in some way.

Utterly unaffected. Very pure and sweet music. A more honest and human collaboration between guitarists can't be found.

For me, bar none, the most soulful, impressionistic, holy rendering of Naima I have ever heard from these guitarists on Love Devotion Surrender.

Nice combination of two different personalities. A few words for all those who always want to force a playing music together into a competition. Some guitarists spend a lot of time and effort in finding and rendering a beautifully coloured voice. A sound that touches your heart. Others work on complexity. Others on scales and speed. When watching guitar videos on Youtube you often get the impression that the number of likes depends on how many notes are produced per second. I fully agree with Michael-David Bushman. Please stop making a contest out of it. Sit back and enjoy the music of two great artists.

Beautiful. I like when rock virtuosos play together with jazz virtuosos in a very consistent way.

Can you listen to great music made by great musicians without comparing or judging?

Santana played superbly, so did Mclaughlin. Ego and competition lefted their hearts and was replaced with love and respect a long time ago.

Music is a free and powerful language, free for everybody and without any limits to play. Carlos Santana is great and John McLaughlin is great, each individual. Two sides of the same coin you know.

sometimes when all you hear on the radio is tunes like "Smooth" and then you hear this and you go "Oh YEA that is also Carlos!!" God bless them both.

McLaughlin has way more technical skill than most, and a lot of jazz fans dismiss Carlos, but I love his playing, too. I liked how he carried the melody and JM added lovely harmony and sweet chord work.
