Now I have a chance to sell cold water to a millionaire on a hot Texas day. I've been getting better at selling online lately because of this and it does work. I use direct messaging on forums that I am a part of. I also add people to my instant messengers and I also Google their username to find where they use that name as a way to contact them. From there I can read a bio and such and see what I can help them with. I find that making that small bit of effort makes a big difference.

When someone asks for a list of services that they need that I can offer on a forum, and some people don't like when I do this, I don't join a public forum thread. I don't like being on a display case. I want to get out there and talk to this guy directly and build a relationship. I've done it and some people hate it because it's "not professional", but it works. Sometimes you gotta do what others aren't willing to do. And the market I'm in, customer service is a premium. People have to pay for that and that's only when someone has a problem, not relationships.

1. Get to know your customer first. Business is about relationship.
2. Don't give too much information about products. Less is more.
3. Shut up when you feel they are interested. Don't oversell.
4. List the risks. Protect your reputation
5. Make sure you follow big customers.
