Cloud vs. On-Prem Storage

What's the difference between cloud and on-prem storage?

On-premise storage means buying physical servers that often go in your own building and it's your (or your IT vendor's) responsibility to maintain both the hardware and the software.

You make a capitol expenditure and are also limited by the amount of space on your servers- if you buy 20 TB of space for example, that's all you get.

If you have peak consumption days like Black Friday with lots of dashboards and reports running, everything slows down because of the storage cap.

Cloud storage, on the other hand, means no capitol expenditure and you’re basically just renting someone else's server space, which is more flexible. This also means maintaining hardware is not your responsibility.

For Snowflake, at least, you're only paying for the space you use.

Cloud storage is more scalable- you don't have to build the church for Easter Sunday.
