In this video, Bob Salmans covers one of the most asked questions for IT practitioners and organizations moving to a cloud environment from an on-premises environment, ‘ Is the Cloud Really Cheaper than On-Premise Solutions?’ If you’re looking to migrate to the cloud or even just leverage some cloud solutions, Bob Salmans explains some of the key cost considerations.

As you may know, we’re in the midst of a massive migration to the cloud. In fact, today a majority of businesses have at least some services being run in the cloud and a large number of businesses are cloud-only. By watching this video, you’ll have access to some of the key points to consider when assessing the cost of a cloud service, when the costs make sense to move to the cloud, and what to watch out for in terms of additional costs when running cloud services.

So, if you're considering deploying a cloud environment, but want to understand how to optimize the cost of your deployment and how that stacks up against the cost of an on-prem environment, keep watching.

To me, it comes down to whether you rent a home or do you buy a home? And if you rent a home, are you ok with the landlord charging you for every drop of water you use or something like that. And you never know who your roommates are going to be from one moment to the next.

Servers aren't that expensive and there doesn't need to be someone there tinkering around with hardware as much as this video makes it seem. I've had servers running non-stop for 5+ years without a blip and haven't touched them once.

I have a bigger view on this debate and forgive me I haven't yet watched this video as I'm just heading off to work. Our internet is a powerful thing because we have a ton of nodes. One site goes down, things go on. We're moving into a direction where we put all our eggs in one basket. Yes, they have backups. Yes, the fail rate could be less for you as a single business if you don't have the IT staff to support your systems. That said, once we're now 10 years down the road and we're all on AWS cloud. When that has a major issue and it happens... granted only for a few hours but be it the day when things in the world are not the same. The power of the internet (being hard to take down) is going to have many single choke points and we all depend on. This to me, is a danger to all things internet. Flip side of that, perhaps it's also the solution to stream lining security as a whole but now we're at the mercy of what ever it's going to cost you. Year after year costs will go up and now you're faced with trying to flip things back. otherwise you keep paying what ever they want to charge.

There’s another thing that I like to take into operational costs. With SaaS usually you don’t have to worry about keeping it updated with the latest security patches, it’s already done for you.
No need to schedule a maintenance window in the middle of the night or wasting your weekend rolling back a bad patch. It’s not the same for IaaS.

Cloud : Dragoon and cavalry in early modern warfare
Prem : Infantry and artillery in early modern warfare
Cloud sometimes work well, but most time Prem is better.

Is Cloud cheaper - it varies?
Is Cloud faster than on prem? - NO
Is it more secure than on prem? - NO
Is it more reliable? - maybe.. unless you have a bad broadband in the area then NO

In overall big NO from me.

Performance on prem is far better and relying fully on Internet connection is terrible...
