I have one got it about 8 yrs ago, never had any problems with it, has always worked for me, maybe you got a return someone damaged, and somebody at HF failed to inspect,

You just need to keep turning the knob to tighten up the carbon plates. That's how all of these toaster style load testers work. They are all made in the same chinese factory - only difference is the logo.

Something probably wrong with the knob, just disassemble it and connect it.

I bought one it had a bunch of stuff loose rattling around in it and bent cover edges, aggervated my sac..took it back.
