This technology was available in the 80's. They were called "nodding ducks". Durability was the issue I believe.

For all who are saying corrosion is the main issue, I say that it can be resolved. The pistons should be well above the waterline and have sacrificial anodes attached that will corrode first. I’m not saying that corrosion isn’t an issue at all, I’m just saying there are logical ways of mitigating it. I’ve worked on tugboats that are far older than I am, and I’m 62-years old. And those boats are still being used with their original hulls.

They really got Poseidon working for free...

My opinion as a civil engineer is that this is cool AF.

Saltwater generators don't last long enough to justify operating costs.
Maybe they can figure it out.

I recall in middle school coming up with this idea. I know others too probably did as well. Nice to see it in action.

This has always seems like the best clean energy method in my mind. Waves never stop rolling in. I hope things have progressed enough in material science for this to finally work!

Gives new meaning to “currently” implementing their plan.

Saltwater destroys things too fast to justify the cost

HDPE, LDPE, nylon, and carbon fibre construction would completely eliminate the need for any metals in the modules exposed to seawater, thusly eliminating the corrosion factor.

It's crazy because this idea has been rolling around in my head since I was a child. It's great to see it come to fruition. I'll leave you with another idea that trolling around in my head but can't seem to find or start the project. It's with hot and cold and cold water freezes. There has to be a way to convert it to energy. I'll leave it at that

So, it converts motion energy into hydraulic pressure which in turn runs a hydraulic motor that drives a generator. Cool. Wonder how much pressure is needed to drive a 1mW generator? Can we instead convert the pressure directly to electricity with piezoelectric?

They’ve been doing this in Norway for decades in the fjords

It should look like a bowl with a cover so swells or waves can hit it from all directions and you won’t have worry about water crashing over & waisting energy loss. Or a ball shaped idea. Bowl or ball shaped would be more efficient and effective.

This is the kind of tech I could get behind. The use of natural occuring energy without hurting the ecosystem is a no-brainer. As with everything, implementation and long-term stability are key.

Corrosion and maintenance must be such major issues making this idea unworkable.

my grandfather was the inventor, I still have blueprints. their patents ran out and a large company came and swooped them up

Diverse ideas lead to durable design. Maybe floats can be made from recycled plastic and rubber. 😊

Due to waves like this primarily being caused by wind and such this is indirectly making power via wind.

See the ingenuity when the world needs it so desperately.
