In this exclusive clip from The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two, episode four, our favorite wandering wizard, The Stranger (Daniel Weyman), meets a highly-anticipated character, Tom Bombadil (Rory Kinnear). Yes, Tolkien fans finally get to say hello to the live-action version of this strange jolly being full of magic and mystery.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two is now streaming on Prime Video.
---
In Season Two of The Rings of Power, Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without an army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. Building on Season One’s epic scopy and ambition, the new season plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots…as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all…each other.

I always liked Tom Bombadil. Lived a simple life in the forest with his wife and was a jolly happy man appreciating nature. And the Ring had little effect on him too. What a chad

So The character that Jack black played in the parody of LOTR has been Tom Bombadil all along.

My name is Bombadil, Tom Bombadil. Shaken, not stirred.

"Old Tom Bombadil is a merry fellow; Bright blue his jacket is, and his boots are yellow. Tom looked like an old man who was taller and heavier than a Hobbit, but not quite tall enough for a man. His face was creased and red as a ripe apple with blue and bright eyes."

Tolkien's description of Tom. Pleased to see Rings Of Power got it right 😂

I think the description of tom in the book was quite different. It seems the movie almost always portray the characters slovenly.

I like how they do the effects for the tree trap pretty much exactly the same as the effects from the extended edition scene in fangorn forest. Also both this and that scene kinda give the feeling that the victims were almost “provoking” the trees to do that. Merry and Pippin were goofing around fighting over water and making noise, and here the mysterious stranger guy is trying to break off a branch…

The original Old Man Willow scene is more of a slow burn, as the hobbits are actively lured in and put to sleep by the tree. Frodo also comes extremely close to drowning as a root traps him underwater, and Sam demonstrates his first of many MVP moments by being the only one not to fall asleep and cutting Frodo loose with a hatchet!

A nice homage to his appearance in the book. Shame we never got it in the movie.

For the people who keep saying Tom Bombadil is Eru Iluvatar in disguise this is explicitly denied by Tolkien himself saying TB was a created being not The One himself, he is not the creator of Middle-Earth nor any others.

Letter 181 says: There is no embodiment of the One, of God, who indeed remains remote, outside the World, and only directly accessible to the Valar or Rulers.

Letter 211 says: The One does not physically inhabit any part of Ea.

No, Bombadil is not Tolkien.

Letter 180 says: I am not Gandalf, being a transcendent Sub-creator in this little world. As far as any character is 'like me' it is Faramir - except that I lack what all my characters possess (let the psychoanalysts note!) Courage.

Bombadil both fails to be identified in response to this question being asked, and fails in the sub-creative responsibilities mentioned here and other places in letters.

Thank you Nerdist, that was a great snippet of Tom - loving the elements linked in with his meeting the Stranger - a Rhun huorn nodding back to the fact the forest at this point is expansive (and so is Tom's territory) until both the Numenorean greed chops down most of the forests across Eriador and Rhovanion and the wars of Sauron burn down the rest, till we get scattered enclaves like Entwood, Old Forest, Chetwood etc. Tom's lands get shrunk then.

Also that Elrond uses squirrels to explain how vast the forests once were: “Time was when a squirrel could go from tree to tree from what is now the Shire to Dunland west of Isengard.” I love that this is Tolkien using old stories from Lancashire, Wirral and Cheshire: “The squirrels ran from tree to tree, From Formby Point to Hilbre.” And of course Tolkien knew that in the Green Knight, Gawain swerved past the "wilderness of Wirral".

Loving that TRoP is a love note to both Tolkien, his fiction and his academic works.

It should be a far greener area, not a tree in the middle of rocky desert

Why is Jack Black playing Tom Bombadil with a welsh accent?

Why isn't he singing? Why is he so tall? Why is old man Willow being shushed like a dog? Where are his bright yellow boots and where is his bright blue jacket? Where is the forest?

Hoy now, merry dol! Tom should be a-singing!

This tree is old man willow. He can be seen in the extended edition of the lord of the rings films doing the same to merry and pippin. The desert will later become a beautiful landscape and house the shire.

I was waiting for him to say "Tom Bombadil. But my friends call me Chip". Then make Gandalfs life hell for the rest of the season.
