I heard her name is pronounced "an-yes" (which is the verbal pun they teased in the new year's drawing). I've actually seen more of Varda than Demy. In terms of Criterion boxsets being complete I don't think there's many besides maybe Jean Vigo and Jacques Tati? I do think it's a significant statement this is the first complete works New Wave director we've seen from Criterion.

Varda par Agnès is a perfect primer and a great place to start, which must be why it's positioned at the start of the set. In the press release they include the Scorsese quote too! I've never disliked a Varda film, most of what I've seen are shorts but I can definitely recommend her L.A. films (Mur murs, Documenteur), and Daguerréotypes is wonderful in enlightening the lives of shop owners on the street Varda lived on. Une minute pour une image is maybe the most obscure short (well series of television segments), but it's highly autobiographical because some of the images Varda explores inspired her, and an image of her mother. Black Panthers isn't in the CAE set but it's an essential document to history. Also, Les 3 Boutons (Varda's last short) is actually part of a wider series by fashion brand Miu Miu - they've also worked with Lucrecia Martel, Ava DuVernay, Miranda July, Alice Rohrwacher, Naomi Kawase, Chloë Sevigny, Dakota Fanning, Haifaa Al-Mansour (all the shorts are on YouTube).

What do you think the likelihood of this being region free or getting a region b release? I've heard of the potential wong kai war box set and I'm crossing my fingers its region free or gets a region b release.
