It was directed by Takashi Murakami, a famous Japanese visual artist. I guess that’s why they picked it up?

Takashi Murakami is a Goat of art. It definitely isn’t for everyone, but I loved it.

It's not really a "movie" per se. It's more of an art piece. In the context of Takashi Murakami's oeuvre as a whole, it's actually pretty great. It's very deliberately a mashup of a million overused tropes. The kitsch is very intentional. It's incredibly successful at what it tries to do. Most of the reasons people say it's "bad" are almost like saying Blazing Saddles is a "bad" western. If you want it to be a John Wayne western, it's a terrible western. That's not what it's supposed to be though.

The release didn't really do it any favors by not providing more context. I would have done this with some additional Takashi Murakami art postcards or something. I feel like that would make it make a lot more sense overall.

For me, it was Mulholland Drive 4K scan but their 1080P (before they released the UHD). It's a digitally noisy picture in certain spots and it's not the film grain.

I remember when they released that I went to Barnes and Noble and bought it impulsively. Ended up being the last of my money in my account and I had a huge overdraft fee. Then I got home and watched it and obviously really regretted it lol

Takeshi Murakami has like a bunch of films and none of them have good ratings. Actually impressive

I think you’re missing the point.
Criterions are not for the casual viewer. You don’t buy a Criterion Collection movie just to see if you’re gonna like it. You buy a Criterion Collection movie because you have watched that movie several times before and you’re looking to know and appreciate more about that movie. Just because you didn’t like doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie.

Only ones I regret buying is shrill, trashy horror shlock at premium boutique prices. ie: New York Ripper. Conversely, this looks like something I might enjoy.

Criterion release a lot of artsy stuff that I wouldn't risk buying.
