Record Audio + MIDI At The Same Time in Logic Pro X:

0:00 - Tutorial on Record Audio + MIDI At The Same Time in Logic Pro X

In this instance, let's assume you hav a midi layer for your keyboard/piano sound, and an audio layer for your microphone.

Step 1: Click on your MIDI track FIRST.

Step 2: Hold down the SHIFT key and click onto your AUDIO layer. Now both layers should be highlighted.

Step 2: Click on the R icon on your new layer so it is flashing, this means you are in RECORD-STANDBY mode.

Step 3: Press the R icon on your AUDIO layer if it is not already flashing/on. This will put you in RECORD STANDBY mode.

Step 4: Press the RECORD button or R as your shortcut. If you have your pre-count turned on (you should), you will get a four count in - and you are live recording both your midi and audio simultaneously.

While you can clean up audio pretty good nowadays, I still recommend maxing out your budget to get a proper studio mic, to preamp, to aftermarket tube, to soundcard, to daw as your chain. If you're just starting out though, the blue yetti usb mics are your go to. If you're a loopstation beatboxer etc you have about 5mics under $150 to choose from too.

Bang bang~!

Okay, this works. But what if you want to record vocals (audio) and playing piano (midi) at the same time from scratch without a click track? I want to record my voice and my piano playing so that Logic records the tempo like it does in Adapt Tempo or Auto Tempo mode recording. However, when trying this, Logic records both audio and midi, however they are not in sync when in Adapt Tempo mode. In Auto Tempo audio and midi are closer in sync, but not together. In Adapt Tempo mode, it seems that tempo follows the audio track. Anyway, this doesn't work. Now, for a workaround you would thing that I could record both audio and midi in Keep Tempo mode, like you have here. Then Analyze the midi track and line it back up to the audio track. Except that doesn't work. Any ideas how you would do this?

So, the mic for the audio needs to be connected to one usb port and the midi keyboard needs to be connected to another usb port, right ?

I follow your instructions but it doesn’t work. What should the input settings be?

You don’t mention latency / lag / timing out between tracks on playback, that’s the real skill is getting them all in time once tracks have been recorded .
