Cherry Audio | Introducing KR-55C Drum Machine, with Tim Shoebridge

Cherry Audio's KR-55C is a supercharged, best-of-both-worlds software emulation that combines features from two lesser-known drum machines of the post-punk era: Korg's "Rhythm 55" KR-55A and KR-55B. KR-55C boasts all the rhythms from both models, for a total of 240 factory patterns, intros, and fills. Additionally, it adds 200 original patterns and kits that cover a wider range of genres. KR-55C's user interface shifts based on whether the A or B model is selected and includes extra pages that let this beatbox "step out" even further. It features a familiar X0X-style 16-button layout for step-editing and real-time pattern programming, as well as a song mode for chaining up to 99 patterns.

❤ another corker of a device. (Magnetic fields brings back a lot of childhood memories for me! ) The inclusion of the pattern and song editor, similar to the CR78, is excellent, as is the extended sound manipulation and FX settings. All consistent with CA's other products and all very welcome.

General question … do people really use onboard effects on a drum machine for anything other than demos or early in the composition process?

I always want what I think are better quality purpose built plugins (both sound quality and functionality) for my effects and more production control by routing in my DAW rather than using onboard effects.

But maybe I’m wrong in that approach so I’m wondering if people would use these onboard effects for their finished and mixed songs?

(And PS this drum machine is an instant purchase for me … it sounds great of course and is something I would use often.

I can imagine using this along with the CR78 in a track for some interesting production choices.

Still waiting for the 808 emulation though … 🤷🏻‍♂️ one day maybe)

This, I like. The CR-78, for some reason, didn't quite grab me (even though I'm quite the Gary Numan fan). But this one looks more fun to me. The only thing I noticed that I thought wasn't perfect was that you have to edit the closed and open hi hats on different pages. That's kind of annoying when you have a rhythm in your head - it's natural to write them all in one go, I think, and it would have been better to allow that. Only a minor quibble though. This looks like another winner from CA!
