I saw this film in France in the 80's. I never forgot. The atmosphere, the acting, the story. No creepy CGI special effects back then, just genious film directors and proper actors.

It was horror movies like this that modern horror movies will never get close to. When I first saw this as a kid it freaked me out. I bought an uncut copy at a convention on VHS. I can understand why it was illegal at the time in the U.S. and West Germany.

currently reading sam neill's memoir where he talks about Andrzej Żuławski’s brutal directorial methods - bullying and intimidating actors, insisting sam slap isabelle adjani for real, take after take. would never get away with it today. and yet sam says it's the best film he's ever been part of.
