If you don't know me already, my name is Eric and I've worked in finance for the last eight years starting as an intern and now working in executive roles, so I've both interviewed candidates and been interviewed for finance roles many times.
In the resources section above, I've included some key videos that will help you prep for your finance interview, as well as a downloadable question-and-answer PDF that you can use to review as well.
I've also included links to some of my Excel courses. Having strong Excel skills is one of the most important things going into finance roles. DO NOT go into a finance interview without strong business Excel skills. Excel interview questions are very common, and you should expect them.
In this video, I'll help you prepare answers for finance interview questions for entry-level roles. These could include corporate finance or investment banking internships, or maybe MBA programs.
I include some of the most common interview questions as well as how I would answer them. Some of the questions are more general, with a few technical questions included as well.
DISCLAIMER: These are how I would answer these questions, but it doesn't mean that it is the best or the only way.
Here are the finance interview questions I answer in the video:
0:46 What is the goal of finance?
1:44 Can you describe a financial model, and walk through one you built.
3:12 Walk through the main sections of a P&L.
5:20 What are the three main financial statements, and what do they show?
6:21 How do you evaluate the financial health of a company?
7:31 What is cash vs. accrual accounting?
9:46 What's something interesting that has happened in the capital markets recently?
12:09 BONUS: finance interview questions to ask your employer as well!
Always make sure to ask your interviewer good questions. You are interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you - and you want to make sure you feel good about the company before working there.
Final piece of advice - do some reflecting on your life / career.
The reason we prepare for interviews is not to know every question in advance, it's to think about why we want to do the role we're interviewing for, and what experiences in our lives led up to this moment.
Think about your story and how to tell it. Basic knowledge is important, but ultimately people who are reflective, self-aware, and interesting are always the most exciting candidates.
Hope this helps you crush your finance interview!
