I grew up in a junk yard in the early 2000's and the only thing we could get running again was a Briggs. Kohler's always had something major wrong. This is out of 100's of engines

I have a 2003 craftsman LT1000 with the briggs & Stratton engine. You couldn't kill it if you tried. Im getting ready to replace it with another craftsman riding mower with the same engine. Only reason im replacing the 03 is because the seat and paint are warn out and it's become an eyesore.

Can't complain my kohler engine on my 21 year old john deere still runs great after a gazillion hours on it. Don't know how the newer Kohler's stack up but the old Kohler's engines were built pretty good imo. I have never had any real issues with Briggs. I know you can get their engines even on entry level lawn mowers. But the king of lawn mower engines has to go to Honda engines. You pay a premium for a reason with those engines. They're highly reliable and they run smooth like butter.

I have a 2008 Kohler courage. The engine kills the fuel solenoid. I had to add a heat shield. The 3rd replacement I put on a cheap chinese carb and it works great. Good engine.

I'd like to know about lasting of the engine. I've had 2 OHV 18 hp Briggs and Stratton not last. Concerned as to the lasting ability of a Kohler.

I'm looking to get a John Deere and it has the kolher command 23 in it. Is that a decent engine? Would it be worth 700 bucks for the mower?

I'd say it depends on the model of motor. We had an 04 Intek single cylinder 18.5 HP and that thing was a piece of shit. However, I have a 94 I/C OHV Single Cylinder, and that thing is pretty tough. It did have to be rebuilt when we got it 8 years ago, but hasn't given us a problem since. I also really like the Command V-Twins. My grandpa has a 25HP in his GT5000, and that thing has lasted a while with little maintenance. We also have a 23HP on our Berco Snowblower which throws snow as far as the eye can see. Meanwhile, the Courage single cylinders were supposedly made with plastic can gears, which is incredibly embarrassing if this is true. So it depends on the motor. I personally like different models better than others, rather than the companies.

I had a chance to get a free John Deere with broken plastic hood riding mower with Kohler command. I should of grabbed it before they let a scrap guy scrap it
