Here I refurbish a Stanley Bailey #4 Hand Plane for use in the shop.

Here is the "dating" resource I used to identify it's year of manufacture

It’s best to flatten the sole with the plane put together under pressure!

I have two No. 4 Stanley planes. I paid $5 for one and $1 for the other. I probably overpaid a bit for the $5 one. But it does have a corrugated sole on it. The one I got for a dollar is cherry too. Not a spot of rust on it. Sucker was like brand new when I picked it up. It was a deal.

I know its probably boring for most but can I plead on behalf of ASMR fans that you not speed up the video, slow hand movements especially sharpening, combined with the real sounds, great voice and calm tone= gold for us.

Thanks, Steve! I don't foresee cleaning up a hand plane, BUT, I have a BB gun (circa 1960) that belonged to my older brother, and it is soooo rusted out! I am going to try using Evapo-Rust remover that you used! Hopefully, I can pass the BB gun down to my grandson! THIS is why I try to watch EVERY video that you make! I never know WHAT I might learn for future reference!! You really ARE a wealth of information! Thanks again!!

Nice job, Steve. That plane was in pretty good shape to begin with. I think you did great at $20. You hit all of the important parts of plane restoration for use (I am too) and this was a cool video. Nice job, sir.

Nice tip on using the glass as a level smooth surface to level the plane.

Great Video, I just found an old hand plan my Dad had in his garage. I'm going to clean it up. Thanks

The plane is coming out nice. The Evaporust really got rid of a lot of the heavy rust, I've heard that it works well.

Love the heat gun idea! Had some stubburn automotive bolts in the past and that would have helped. My brother that is made of something used an old plane just like that to flatten my cabinet on top where two boards attached.

Very interesting Steve. You get the most out of everything you get into. Thanks!

Funny how you related it to the age of your dad. I did too. My dad was born in 31. Nice episode Explorer Steve.

Nice. I just did one I dated from 1910-1918. Its in a video I did recently. Mine was also found at a pawnshop ($10) but was horrible compared to yours. It looked like it lived in saltwater for a while. It works good now though.

I just used a plane very similar to that to fit together oak cabinets. Didn't have my power planer with me.

Once again, thanks for turning me on to Harbor Freight. Based on your recommendation of their "Snap-On" tool carts, I just bought one, and it's really good quality. $99 for the 26" one. Couldn't touch that price for the quality at HD or Lowe's.

I have never seen that flowchart, can you post a link in the description? Looks like you got a nice find. I have a wall of planes that I use on occasion but I enjoy them as much on the living room wall. It has sort of "old iron" theme going for it.
